The Kirk of the Greyfriars - built in 1620, the first new church after the Reformation - was named after the Franciscan friars whose friary was on the site of the churchyard from 1447 until 1560. The National Covenant was signed at Greyfriars in 1638 and the Martyrs' Monument and Covenanters' Prison bear witness to those turbulent times. Greyfriars is so often associated only with Bobby, the little dog, who sat by his master's grave for 14 years but it is rich in Scottish history too and the kirkyard has a superb collection of l7th and 18th century monuments. |
