Highways and Byways !

It’s easy to visit the traditional tourist areas of the Old Town, but even more rewarding if you take in some of the less obvious streets. Why not try a little tour off the beaten track ? Walk down George IV Bridge past the offices of the new Scottish Parliament, seeing the National Library of Scotland and the Edinburgh Central Library facing each other, then on to Greyfriars Bobby and Greyfriars Kirk.

Turn right down Candlemaker Row to the edge of the Grassmarket then turn right again into the Cowgate . This fascinating street takes you under George IV Bridge and South Bridge and demonstrates why these apparently conventional streets have "bridge" in their name! A short walk along the Cowgate brings you to St. Mary Street, with an exciting variety of small shops, pubs and restaurants, leading across the Canongate to even more in Jeffrey Street. Continuing back under North Bridge brings you to the foot of Cockburn Street with more shops and pubs lining a typical Old Town climb back up to the High Street.
